This study evaluates the pharmacological effects of Lactobacillus fermentum HDB1098 against acetaldehyde-induced hepatotoxicity in vitro and acetaldehyde decomposition in vivo. L. fermentum HDB1098 markedly prevented and mitigated acetaldehyde-induced cytotoxicity and cell death in HepG2 cells via down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-¥á, IL-1¥â) and up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) mRNA expressions. Furthermore, L. fermentum HDB1098 significantly increased the hepatic acetaldehyde dehydrogenase activity and reduced blood acetaldehyde concentration in alcohol-fed Sprague Dawley rats. These results demonstrate that L. fermentum HDB1098 is a potential new health-beneficial candidate that triggers acetaldehyde decomposition and regulates acetaldehyde-induced inflammation in the liver, thereby relieving hangover symptoms.
